Green Bench Brewing, the St. Petersburg brewery that has accumulated a regional following on the strength of its lagers, saisons, and taproom atmosphere, is opening its first Tampa location at 200 N Tampa St in downtown Tampa. Co-founder Khristopher Johnson says the new outpost will prioritize beers that rarely leave the original St. Pete taproom — giving Tampa residents access to limited pours and fan favorites without the Howard Frankland crossing.
Green Bench launched in St. Pete over a decade ago and became one of the more recognized names in Florida craft brewing, earning a spot on VinePair's national top-brewery lists. The brewery built its reputation on a range that runs from clean German-influenced lagers to farmhouse saisons and hop-forward IPAs, and the St. Pete location developed a reputation as much for its hang as its beer — an open, social taproom that attracted both serious beer drinkers and neighborhood regulars.
The Tampa address, 200 N Tampa St, puts the brewery in the heart of downtown's office and hotel corridor, a block from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and within the cluster of development that has reshaped that stretch of the riverfront over the past several years. The precise format of the Tampa space — taproom only, food program, production capacity — has not been confirmed through a filed permit or lease announcement; the opening details so far come from the operator's Instagram.
Johnson's stated intention to focus on pours that don't regularly travel across the bay is a notable programming choice. It positions the Tampa location not as a satellite serving the same menu as the flagship, but as a destination for drinkers who follow the brewery's limited releases and want access without the commute. Whether that means rotating small-batch kegs, a different tap list rotation, or a formal allocation model hasn't been specified in available sourcing.
The move tracks a broader pattern of St. Pete operators testing the Tampa market as downtown density increases and foot traffic from Water Street, Sparkman Wharf, and the convention district expands the customer base for independent hospitality. Green Bench is joining a category — independent craft taprooms in the downtown core — that has been underrepresented relative to the city's size.
An opening timeline has not been announced. The operator's Instagram post did not specify a date or soft-open window, and no permit filings have been publicly confirmed as of this writing. Progress on the 200 N Tampa St buildout is the next signal to watch.
